On Departure

Be cautious when purchasing old and used items. In order to protect Bhutan's cultural heritage, the Bhutanese Government prohibits the ex-port of religious artifacts or antiques of any type. If you are unsure about a particular object, ask your tour guide or call the Division of Cultural Properties in Thimphu or you can contact Swan Tours one of the leading travel agents in India. If you listed personal electronic equipment, cameras, or computers on the entry customs form, they will be checked upon departure. The airport departure tax is US$10.

Dining

Since travel in Bhutan is an all-inclusive package, group travel dictates where you will be eating most of your meals. Usually you will eat in a restaurant or a dining room within a hotel or guest house, in the company of your fellow travelers.

Most meals offered to tour groups are limited to a fixed menu and served buffet style. Most hotels serve Chinese, Continental, and Indian food. In the morning, the cooks usually make a standard Western breakfast (eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice). Although many restaurants have extensive menus, dishes tend to be the same from place to place. Some chefs will take requests, a new concept that seems to work well with travelers. If there is a special dish that your group would like, make sure to make your request well in advance of your scheduled mealtime.

Both lunches and dinners are always served with either a rice or noodle dish, with a variety of vegetables and meats. Since most places cater to travelers, they rarely make Bhutanese food. If you would like to try the native cuisine, which employs a delicious blend of spices, chilies, and cheeses, tell the chef you would like to sample some of the local food. If you are a vegetarian or follow a strict diet, or would prefer something off the menu, discuss this in advance with your tour guide or hotel proprietor.

Precautions

Tap water is not safe to drink in Bhutan, and ice should not be used in any beverage. If you can, either bring a water filter with you, or bring a water bottle, and treat the water with iodine; these methods avoid the pollution of plastic bottles. If you are traveling in a group, your tour guide will probably arrange to have properly treated water available. If not, ask the guide to provide you with bottled water at all meals. Also, brush your teeth with treated, boiled, or bottled water.

It's best to steer clear of raw, unpeeled fruits and vegetables and undercooked meat. Most hotels and better restaurants soak their fruits and vegetables in iodized water. However, if you are not sure, do not eat it. It is best to avoid salads. A wise rule of thumb is to eat hot foods while they're hot.

Tipping

In hotels and restaurants, tipping is not the norm, especially since a 10% services charge and a 10% Bhutan sales tax are added to your bill. Of courses you can always make exceptions if someone does exceptional work for you.
