Delhi-The sparkling new Indira Gandhi International Airport lays a 30-minute drive south-west of central Delhi. The domestic airport is near it; if you are connecting on to Jaipur or Agra, with only a few hours to wait, it is best to go to the domestic airport (by taxi or bus), check the flight, confirm your ticket if the desk is open, and wait in the restaurant found to the right of the check-in desks.
Buying Tickets-The most painless method is to use the in-house travel agency of your hotel (small fee) or a good travel agent (fee small or nothing), a visit to a domestic airline office may often take several hours. Be prepared.
Departures-Each international ticket must be reconfirmed at least 48 hours before departure, otherwise you may be wiped off the airline's computer; check-in time is at least two hours before the flight. Each domestic ticket should be reconfirmed the moment you arrive at the city from where you will be flying out, a job best done for a small fee by the hotel; check-in time is 75 minutes before the flight, but 45 minutes for executive class and for those with hand baggage only.
Steam Trains—India has phased out steam trains entirely except for such special journeys as up to Darjeeling, a short ride up to Ooty and Gwalior's private city service.
Buying Tickets—This is not a land where you buy a ticket and seconds later hop on the train. A ticket is two-tiered: the journey and the seat. Both need to be booked, preferably a day in advance; again a travel agent saves hours of queuing. If the budget permits, go for the best class available. When you arrive at the railway station, a coolie will carry your luggage on his head right to your seat, which you can locate by finding your name on the checklist pinned outside each carriage.
BY Bus AND COACH
Deluxe buses are an excellent way to move around this little area of India. They are cheap, clean, fast and make drink and lavatory stops at the good midway cafes.
