Exploring Rajasthan

The fact that Rajasthan is huge-all of 342,239 sq km, to be precise-may seems daunting at first, but with a little bit of thinking, one can figure out how to handle it. The state as such has only a handful of major cities that have extensive communications to the outside world, and of these Jaipur and Jodhpur make for the best base cities to explore the surrounding area. Both have adequate rail, road and air links to the rest of India, and the six trails suggested in this book begin at either of these two cities. Jaipur, tucked away in the north-eastern half of Rajasthan, makes an excellent base for exploring the eastern part of the state, with convenient trails into the heart of the Shekhavati area (north-west of Jaipur, and famous for its stunning mansions, each of them beautifully decorated with murals), into the wildlife parks that lie on the fringes of the state, and further south, via Ajmer, to the green, cool areas of Udaipur and Mount Abu.

Jodhpur, right across Rajasthan, stands in the desert and is perfect for discovering the Thar. From here, winding roads travel deep into the heart of the desert, where sand dunes, kheji trees and villages that time forgot are the norm. This area is that of majestic fortresses, of opulent havelis and a culture that is as lively as the desert is-or seems to be-lifeless.
