Andaman and Nicobar Islands are situated at a far away distance separated by thick blue water of the Bay of Bengal. Once the passenger/ tourist reaches the Island, naturally he/she is cut off from mainland. The situation was bad during 1960s, 70s and even up to mid of 80s. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are now provided with communication facilities though not fully to a satisfactory level. In A&N Islands, the Port Blair city has a well developed network of modern means of communication system like speed post, telegram, telephone, STD/ISD facility, Fax, Tele printer, wireless.

The Port Blair city has one Head Post Office, one Head Telegraphic Office and one Telephone Exchange. The other places and islands have post offices with telegram booking facilities. The postal facility in these islands is slowly increasing. Though the facility is not fully available to the interior islands, the main Inter Islands have full communication facilities which are useful to all tourists. There are 32 sub-post offices, 64 branch post offices besides one head post office, one telegraphic office and telephone exchanges functioning in this territory.

Besides the telecommunication facilities, the A&N Islands have been provided with Television (Doordarshan) and All India Radio facilities. Port Blair Doordarshan and Port Blair All India Radio, having their studios at Delanipur (two kms from the Port Blair bus terminus), are an excellent means of communicating the ideas to the most interior parts where no other means of communication are possible. Moreover, the cable T.V operators share the social responsibility of providing communication means, thereby the people of these islands enjoy different satellite T.V's Programmes. Almost all the hotels and other accommodations have the inter-corn facilities in each room. However, only a few hotels have telephone facility in each room.

Four important dailies namely, Dqily Telegraph in English, Dweep Samachar in Hindi, published by Andaman & Nicobar Administration and Andaman Herald in English and Andaman Tamizhan in Tamil published by a private person are from Port Blair city. Sunday editions are very useful to the tourists. Thirteen weekly papers are published in three languages. Strictly speaking, they are not weekly magazines, they are also like newspapers. As for magazines, sixteen issues are published in the city in eight languages.

Here in this territory the city telegraphic office has the facility of public call office (PCO). No post office is havings this facility. However, many places in the city, main places of regions have the STD, ISD/PCO facilities, educated unemployed persons.
