If you have a fast car, preferably a sports convertible, this is a drive that you will relish and remember. A flat road cutting through the heart of the largely uninhabited Thar Desert with very little traffic on it. Brisk winds bounce off the windscreen and sometimes the elegant and fleet footed chinkara gazelles are seen grazing by the side of the road. Towns with interesting names like Bap, meaning father, recede in the rearview mirror and before you know it, you are in Phalodi.
This sleepy town is known to almost all avid birdwatchers because of the tiny village of Kheechan, which is located just 5 kms from here. The water bodies in Kheechan attract a large number of demoiselle cranes and an equally large number of ornithologists, who come here to observe large flocks of these noisy and attractive birds. I strongly recommend taking the short diversion to this crane paradise and also suggest that on your return to Phalodi, you stop to refuel. In this vast desert land, the distances between towns with fuel stations are quite long and it's best to fill up wherever fuel is available.

Carry on to Pokaran, the town that needs no introduction as almost everyone has about the nuclear tests that were conducted here by Indian scientists. While everyone has heard about this town, few know about the superb ancient sandstone fort, part of which has now been converted into a heritage hotel.
The road from Pokaran to Jaisalmer is almost arrow straight and allows for rapid motoring. But please keep a sharp lookout for deer and nilgai (blue bull), as they often tend stray onto the road. Nilgais have a tendency run across the road when they are alarmed by a speeding vehicle and are particularly difficult to spot after dark. So stay alert and be very careful.
On approaching Jaisalmer, one of the best-loved destinations in Rajasthan, the fantastic fantasy like golden fort appears to rise out of the desert haze and just one look assures you of an enchanting stay in this destination that defies definition.
