The construction of the Phool Mahal Palace started in 1870 and this monsoon palace situated in front of the fort and facing the Gundalao Lake, Was till recently used as a private residence by the Kishangarh family, Now the present Maharaja Brajraj Singh and his wife Maharani Meenakshi Devi have renovated this fine palace and converted it into a comfortable hotel. As the name suggests, the lotus flower inspires the architecture of the Phool Mahal Palace, and its highlight is its location.
Most of the rooms and terraces overlook the Gundalao Lake that plays host to several migratory birds including flamingoes and pelicans. Unfortunately, the lake is almost completely dry now due to the poor rains that Rajasthan has seen for the last couple of years.

Another highlight of Kishangarh is its miniature paintings. When the Mughal Empire started to disintegrate, some well-known artists sought refuge in Kishangarh, and thus were born the unique Kishangarh School of Art.
The sharp profile, slanting eyes with an aquiline nose became a hallmark of this school. In fact the 18th century painting of Radha is often referred to as the Mona Lisa of India and is a popular symbol of art in our country. This old style of painting survives even today and there are anywhere between 2. 000 to 5000 artists employed in this trade in Kishangarh. They paint copies of the original miniatures on paper, cloth, wood, marble and several other surfaces. The natural pigments used in the past are rare now, and most artists prefer to paint with Camel poster colours.
